Sri Lanka/Maldives Trip

Well, that was fun!! 17 divers and snorkellers went to the Maldives for 6 days of diving. Sydney-Colombo-Gan was how we got there. Gan is at the southernmost island of Addhu Atoll which itself is at the Southern tip of the Maldives. It was a British RAF base until it was handed back to the Maldives in 1976. That base is now Gan International Airport allowing very easy access to the Equator Village Hotel …about 4 minutes away. For our first dive we headed to Manta Point and were greeted with 30 C water, 25m viz and 8-10 Mantas; what a way to start! The Mantas were curious and hovered right on top of the divers, enjoying the bubbles; it was a trip highlight. We went back to Manta point twice more and saw Mantas every time but not in the same quantities. Plenty of dives on the outer reefs ensured we saw even better viz and very healthy hard corals. A dive on the British Loyalty, a tanker torpedoed twice by the Japanese in WWII but still floating until it was scuttled in 1946, was interesting as much for the back history as the dive itself. Finally, we enjoyed a truly spectacular shark dive where 3-4 Tiger Sharks came in to munch on some of the tuna that had been dropped on a point. It was very impressive and one of the best shark dives I have done anywhere in the world. 13 Dives later we left Gan for a Sri Lanka tour where 12 Froggies visited some of the countries highlights. The Buddha caves of Dambulla, the spectacular rock fortress of Sigiriya, the Temple of the Tooth in Kandy, the Minneriya National Park, an Elephant Sanctuary and the tea growing highlands of Nuwara Eliya. It really was a fabulous trip and although the days were full the sights and experiences were worth it. Can’t wait to get back!
