When to buy a snorkelling package versus separate pieces 

A snorkelling package is the right call when the snorkelling is occasional, the budget is fixed, and the decision needs to be over in five minutes. Adult packages typically run from around $80 for a basic set up to around $200 for a higher-end matched set with a gear bag. Kids' packages start lower and are sized for smaller faces, not just shrunk-down adult moulds. 

The piece-by-piece approach is better when one piece of the kit needs to be specific. The most common reason is mask fit. Faces are not standard; the mask in a $100 package may not seal on a face that does fit a $90 standalone mask. If you have ever returned from a snorkel with a sore nose bridge or water in the mask, the off-the-shelf package may not be your move next time. 

For kids, sizes change fast. A package bought at age six rarely lasts through to age nine. The kids' snorkelling gear range covers individual replacement pieces sized for growing feet and faces, so the family is not buying a whole new package every summer.
