Spearfishing - Floats & Lines

Spearfishing floats, flags and lines

Spearfishing floats, Alpha flags and float lines: the safety and shore-link gear that NSW spearfishing rules require, not an optional extra. The Frog Dive range covers inflatable floats for travel and shore entry, rigid foam floats for surface durability, torpedo floats for towing fish, plus the float lines and Alpha flags that make you visible to other water users. This is not the gear to cheap out on; a missing or unreadable flag is a fast way to end up in the wrong conversation with another boatie.

What NSW spearfishing rules require for floats and flags

Spearfishing in NSW is regulated by NSW DPIRD. The rules require an Alpha flag visible to other water users while you are spearfishing, a minimum distance from other water users while a loaded gun is in the water, and the spear tip covered when the gun is on land. The specific distance and visibility rules can change; check the current NSW DPIRD rules before you go. The spearfishing rules and licensing in NSW guide covers the rules picture as it currently stands.

For float selection, the three main choices break down by use case:

  • Inflatable floats: light, pack-down small, easy to travel with, less puncture-resistant. Good for shore entry where you carry the kit in on foot.
  • Rigid foam floats: heavier, more durable, hold their shape and the flag upright in chop. Good for boat-based spearfishing and rough conditions.
  • Torpedo floats: streamlined shape, tow easily, designed for moving distance with the float. Good for longer surface swims between dive spots.

Float line choice comes down to length and material. Line length should suit your maximum dive depth plus surface scope; 15 to 25 metres covers most NSW shore diving. Dyneema is light, low-stretch and abrasion-resistant. PVC bungee absorbs shock when a big fish hits, which protects your rigging at the cost of more stretch and bulk.

If you have not rigged a float and line before, bring it into the Gladesville shop and we will help you set it up. Call (02) 9958 5699 if you are buying remotely. See also the spearguns collection and the spearfishing rigging collection for the rest of the kit.
