Freediving accessories

Freediving accessories

Freediving accessories that support the main kit rather than replace it: rubber weight belts, weights, freediving lanyards and bottom plates for depth-line training, nose clips for static apnea, storage and travel bags. Most accessories enter a freediver's kit after the PADI Freediver Course (/products/padi-freediver-course), when training takes specific shape and the gear gaps become visible. The Frog Dive range covers consumables, replacements and training aids, with in-store advice at Gladesville on what is worth buying and when.

What freediving accessories actually matter

The accessories worth buying first are the ones that get used every session.

A rubber weight belt is the standard freediving weight belt because the rubber contracts and expands with your wetsuit as you descend and ascend, holding position on your hips rather than sliding up your ribs at depth. The Marseille-style stainless buckle releases with one hand. Weights are usually lead in 1kg increments; threading them onto the belt in the right balance is something the shop can help with first time.

Freediving lanyards and bottom plates are training-specific. A lanyard attaches you to a depth line for safe descent and ascent on a fixed line, which is standard depth-discipline practice. A bottom plate weights the bottom of the line. Both belong to depth training, which belongs to supervised practice with a trained buddy. Do not freedive a line solo. Shallow-water blackout can happen without warning and is fatal without a buddy.

Nose clips are for static apnea training (lying face-down in water holding the breath for time) and dynamic apnea (swimming horizontally on a single breath). Both are training disciplines covered by the PADI Freediver Course at Frog Dive.

Storage and travel bags round out the consumables. For the rest of the freediving kit, see the freediving gear package collection. Call (02) 9958 5699 for advice on what to buy in what order.
