Spearfishing and freediving computers

Spearfishing and freediving computers

Spearfishing computers, often the same device worn as a freediving watch, track depth, dive time, surface interval and dive count. The Frog Dive range covers Shearwater (Teric, Tern) and similar brands with apnea and freediving modes built in. Most spearos buy their first computer once they are regularly diving past ten metres or working deeper structure where surface intervals matter for safety, not before. The in-store team at Gladesville can walk through the depth-tracking versus surface-interval-timing priority depending on the discipline you spend most time in.

Spearfishing computer or scuba computer with freediving mode

A scuba dive computer with a freediving mode and a dedicated spearfishing or freediving computer overlap in features but differ in priorities.

A scuba computer is built around no-decompression tracking, which is not relevant on a breath-hold dive. Its freediving mode usually offers depth, dive time, surface interval and a basic log. That covers most casual spearos. The downside: a scuba computer is bigger, heavier and harder to read at depth.

A dedicated spearfishing or freediving computer is built around the breath-hold use case from the start. The sample rate is higher, the depth alarm is configurable for the specific working depth, the surface interval timer reminds you when you have rested long enough to dive again safely, and the dive log captures every duck-dive separately. Brands like Shearwater (the Teric and Tern), and similar competitors, are popular with serious spearos and freedivers for this reason.

For freedivers specifically, see the freediving watches and computers collection, which leans more toward apnea-mode training and discipline work. The two collections overlap on hardware but differ on framing.

If you are not sure which side of the line your diving sits on, the dive computer buyer's guide blog walks through the full comparison including the scuba alternatives. Or come into Gladesville and we will show you the displays in person; the right computer is one you can read at a glance when your lungs are protesting.
