Which Garmin Descent should you buy? G1, G2, Mk2S, Mk3i and X50i compared

The Garmin Descent range is a set of multi-sport smartwatches that also work as full dive computers. If you already wear a Garmin, or you train across running, cycling and swimming as well as diving, one of these earns its place on your wrist. If you only dive, and you want the clearest screen for the least money, a plain dive computer is usually the smarter buy. Across the range, two things separate the models: the screen, and whether they show your tank pressure on your wrist. The G1 and Mk2S are the compact, long-battery models. The G2 adds a bright colour screen. The Mk3i and X50i add air integration, and the X50i adds dive-site maps.

Choosing a Garmin Descent is less about which one is best and more about how much watch you need. The gap between the entry G1 and the touchscreen X50i is large, in features and in price. Below is what each model does, who it suits, and who should look at a plain dive computer instead.

Every Descent is a full dive computer, not a watch with a depth gauge bolted on. Each one runs single and multiple gas dives, nitrox (air with extra oxygen), gauge mode, apnoea for freediving, and a closed-circuit rebreather mode. So the range covers your first reef dive through to technical diving.

They all mark your entry and exit points with surface GPS, store up to 200 dives on the wrist, and sync to the free Garmin Dive app. Out of the water, each one is a full Garmin watch, with wrist heart rate, sleep tracking, Body Battery energy monitoring and more than 30 sport profiles.

All of them use the same decompression maths: the Bühlmann ZHL-16C algorithm with adjustable gradient factors. That is the same family Shearwater uses, and it lets you set how conservative you want the computer to be. More on what that means below.

Two things change between models: the screen, and air integration (showing your tank pressure on your wrist through a small wireless transmitter). Get those two right for your diving and the rest is detail.

Garmin Descent G1 and G1 Solar

The G1 is the entry point, and for a lot of divers it is all the computer they need. It has a monochrome, sunlight-readable screen (the kind that gets clearer in bright light, not dimmer), a sapphire lens, and full Garmin fitness tracking. It runs up to 25 hours in dive mode and around 21 days as a watch.

The G1 Solar adds a solar charging lens. In practice that means the watch tops itself up from daylight, stretching smartwatch battery to about four months for people who spend a lot of time outdoors. If you dive on trips and hate carrying chargers, the Solar is worth the small step up.

Neither G1 has air integration, and both are rated to 100 metres rather than 200. For recreational diving that is plenty. Best for: divers who want the full Garmin experience at the lowest price, and anyone who values battery life over a colour screen.

Garmin Descent Mk2S

The Mk2S is the small-wrist option. It has a 1.2 inch colour screen, again the sunlight-readable transflective type, and a sapphire lens. The case is smaller than the Mk3i and X50i, which suits smaller wrists or anyone who wants a dive computer that does not look oversized on land.

You get the same six dive modes as the rest of the range, an underwater compass, and surface GPS. Battery is up to 30 hours in dive mode. The trade-off for the compact size is screen room: there is less space for data, and no air integration. Best for: divers who want full function in the smallest package Garmin makes.

Garmin Descent G2

The G2 is the one people get wrong, because the number suggests it sits just above the G1. In display terms it leapfrogs it. The Garmin Descent G2 has a bright AMOLED colour screen, the same display type as the far pricier Mk3i, and up to 12 days of battery as a watch.

What it does not have is air integration. So the G2 is for the diver who wants a vivid, easy-to-read colour screen and a smart everyday watch, but does not care about seeing tank pressure on the wrist. It runs the full set of dive modes, nitrox and trimix included, plus the health and GPS features shared across the range. Best for: divers who want the good screen and everyday smartwatch feel without paying for air integration they will not use.

Garmin Descent Mk3i (43mm and 51mm)

The Garmin Descent Mk3i is where the range gets serious. It has a 1.4 inch AMOLED screen, a sapphire lens, a 200 metre depth rating, and an ambient light sensor that keeps the screen readable from bright sun to a dark wreck. Battery is strong for an AMOLED unit at up to 66 hours in dive mode.

The headline feature is air integration. Pair it with a Descent T2 transmitter (sold separately) on your first stage and your tank pressure, gas time remaining and air consumption show on your wrist. Through Garmin's SubWave sonar network the Mk3i can also monitor multiple tanks and let you see a buddy's air, with preset diver-to-diver messages rolling out by firmware. It adds a dive torch and a dedicated freediving mode on top.

The 43mm and 51mm versions are the same computer in two sizes. Pick the 51mm for a bigger, easier-to-read screen, or the 43mm for a lighter watch on a smaller wrist. Best for: active divers who want air integration, a bright screen and full multi-sport training in one device.

Garmin Descent X50i

The Garmin Descent X50i is the flagship, and the only Descent with a touchscreen. The 3 inch AMOLED display is the largest and clearest in the range, which makes your ascent profile and depth chart easy to read at a glance. It has a sapphire lens, a built-in dive light, and a 200 metre rating.

Its standout feature is DiveView maps: depth contours for more than 4,000 dive sites, on your wrist. For a diver planning unfamiliar sites, that is genuinely useful. It takes the same T2 air integration and SubWave network as the Mk3i, and you can watch up to three paired transmitters at a glance.

The X50i is a lot of computer. Most recreational divers will not use the maps or the touchscreen enough to justify the step up from the Mk3i. But if you travel to dive, or you want the biggest, brightest screen with maps built in, it is the top of the range. Best for: travelling divers and anyone who wants maximum on-wrist data and site maps.

Do you need the Descent T2 transmitter?

Air integration on the Mk3i and X50i needs a separate Descent T2 transmitter, which screws onto a high-pressure port on your first stage. You do not have to buy it with the computer. You can add it later, so it is fine to buy the Mk3i now and the transmitter when your budget allows.

Is it worth it? Air integration is convenient rather than essential. A submersible pressure gauge on a hose tells you the same tank pressure for far less money. What the transmitter adds is that reading on your wrist next to your depth and time, plus the ability to see a buddy's air and swap short messages through the SubWave network. For most recreational divers that is a nice-to-have. For instructors, guides and anyone diving in a team, it starts to earn its keep. How does the Garmin algorithm compare to Shearwater and Suunto?

This is the question that stops a lot of Garmin-versus-Shearwater debates. Garmin, Shearwater and the Suunto Ocean all run the Bühlmann ZHL-16C algorithm with gradient factors. In plain terms, that is the widely trusted decompression maths, and it lets you dial in how cautious the computer is. A common recreational setting is around 40/85, and more cautious divers go tighter.

So on the numbers that keep you safe, a Garmin Descent is not doing anything less proven than a Shearwater. At recreational depths the practical difference between good computers is small. What matters far more is that you set sensible gradient factors, dive within your training, and treat the computer as one tool rather than the whole plan. Garmin says as much itself: its dive computers are for certified divers and should not be your only source of dive information.

The Mk3i and X50i support trimix and rebreather modes, but the gear does not qualify the diver. If you want to move into technical or rebreather diving, that starts with training, not a watch. Does the surface GPS help on Sydney shore dives?

Yes, and it is one of the range's more useful features for local diving. Every Descent marks your entry and exit points on the surface with GPS. For boat diving that is a nice-to-have. For shore diving around Sydney it pulls its weight.

Sites like Bare Island at La Perouse, Kurnell and Shelly Beach at Manly reward getting your entry and exit right, especially when the swell is up or the visibility drops. Dropping a GPS pin on the spot you got in means you can line up your exit rather than surfacing into a rock platform 50 metres away.

The GPS only works on the surface, not underwater, because water blocks the signal. So it will not navigate you around the reef. But for setting up a shore entry and finding your way back to it, it is a real advantage over a computer without GPS.

So which Garmin Descent is the best buy?

There is no single best Garmin dive computer, only the right one for your diving and budget. The short version:

  • Diving on a budget, or you want the longest battery: G1, or G1 Solar if you travel.
  • Small wrist, or you want the least bulky option: Mk2S.
  • You want a bright colour screen and everyday smartwatch, but not air integration: G2.
  • You want air integration and the full package: Mk3i, in 43mm or 51mm to suit your wrist.
  • You travel to dive and want maps and the biggest screen: X50i.

And the part a spec sheet will not tell you: if you do not already own a Garmin, and you are not fussed about training metrics across other sports, you may be better served by a plain dive computer. A Shearwater Peregrine or Suunto Ocean gives you a large, clear dive display for less than the air-integrated Garmins, without the smartwatch layer you might never use. Does the Garmin Descent have air integration?

Only some models. The Mk3i and X50i support air integration when paired with a Descent T2 transmitter (sold separately). The G1, Mk2S and G2 do not. If seeing tank pressure on your wrist matters to you, you need the Mk3i or X50i.

What is the battery life of a Garmin Descent?

Do I need to rinse a Garmin Descent like a normal dive computer?
