When and why to replace speargun rigging 

Rigging gets replaced more often than the gun itself. The four most common rebuilds: 

• Bands fatigue with use, sun exposure and time. A band that has lost its snap loses you accuracy and power. Plan to replace bands every season for active spearos, sooner for daily divers. 
• Shooting line frays where it runs through the rigging anchor and the swivel. A frayed line will fail at the worst possible moment, which is on a big fish. Inspect after every dive and replace at first sign of wear. 
• Shafts bend on rock impact and big fish. A bent shaft hunts off-line and is not worth re-straightening past minor flex. Carry a spare on long trips. 
• Breakaway systems take the abuse from fish that run hard. The breakaway line and the bungee section are designed to absorb that abuse and need periodic replacement. 

Shooting line material choice splits between monofilament and Dyneema. Mono is cheaper, has more stretch, and is easier to crimp. Dyneema is stronger for its diameter, has less stretch, and holds knots that mono cannot. Most experienced spearos use Dyneema for the main shooting line and mono as a leader on softer shots.
