Spearfishing - Gear Packages

What goes in a spearfishing kit 

A full spearfishing kit is more than the gun. The minimum starter set for NSW shore diving is: 

• Speargun (90cm to 100cm rubber-powered suits most new spearos) 
• Low-volume mask and a soft drop-away snorkel 
• Long-blade fins with foot pockets sized for a wetsuit boot 
• 5mm to 7mm two-piece open-cell or smoothskin wetsuit 
• Weight belt with quick-release buckle (rubber belt holds at depth as the suit compresses) 
• Rigid or inflatable float with a 50-metre-visible Alpha flag, and a float line of the right length for your dive depth 
• Dive knife (line cutter mounted on the belt is sufficient for safety; spearos usually carry a sharper blade as well) 
• Gloves rated for the conditions 

A complete starter package usually bundles most of these. Once you are diving regularly, the specialist pieces (carbon fins, a roller-band gun, a freediving computer) earn their place. Most do not on a first kit. 

Spearfishing in NSW is regulated by NSW DPIRD, and a NSW recreational fishing fee is required for ages 18 and over. Check current rules, size and bag limits, and closures before you go. The spearfishing rules and licensing in NSW guide covers the rules picture in detail.
